Texas Bluebonnet
(Lupinus texensis)

The Texas Bluebonnet is the primary species of lupine seen in Texas. The state flower of Texas, it is widely planted along state highways by the Texas Department of Transportation. From late-March to mid-April some parts of Texas are totally in bloom with bluebonnets--especially central Texas around Brenham and the Texas hill country around Austin and San Antonio. On a good year, like 2001, their numbers in some spots is breathtaking. This picture was taken in April 2001 near Llano Texas on a perfect overcast day with very little wind.
