Blind Prickly Pear
(Optunia rufida)

Old Texan legend says that this cactus was capable of blinding cattle, hence its name. This prickly pear has no thorny spines, but instead pods of rust colored glochids that fly easily when the cactus is jarred or in heavy winds. I like this shot with the new blossums, the buds, the spines, and the blue Big Bend sky in the background.
