Blind Prickly Pear
(Optunia rufida)

Prickly pear were in bloom everywhere in Big Bend in April. This is the blind prickly pear with it's beautiful yellow blossums and the distinctive orange blossums surrounding it. This prickly pear has no thorny spines, but instead pods of rust colored glochids that fly easily when the cactus is jarred or in heavy winds. Old Texan legend says that this cactus was capable of blinding cattle, hence its name.
