Chisos Mountain Hedgehog
(Echinocereus chisoensis)

This a fairly uncommon cactus in Big Bend. It grows at elevations below 2500 ft, and is usually not found in groups. This one was found about 12 miles from Panther Junction on the Rio Grande Village road. I was walking out to a large prickly pear that I could see from the road and the bright pink caught my eye about 50 yards away. There were two others in the area. The stiking contrast of the bright pink border, the light pink center, and the almost maroon center, along with the gold stamen make this one of the prettiest cactus blooms I've seen.
